Full Colour Wall Stickers Lifting

Post by Wallchimp123 » Sun Jan 14, 2018 5:03 pm

Hi, we have recently printed some full colour wall stickers onto Ritrama Jet 100 micron white monomeric digital print film on our Roland VP540i. We have just received a email from our customer saying that the wall stickers are lifting around the edges and one customer said that it would not stick to the wall at all. Do any of you have any experience of this or what could be causing it? Any help or advise would be most appreciated. Thanks, Rachael.

Ive seen other posts on other forums (uk sign makers) complaining about certain paints, such as the dulux easy clean etc causing adhesion issues.

How long were the prints cured prior to installation?

HI Kai,
Thank you for your reply.
We have experienced two problems within the last few weeks.
On both occasions there has been approximately a week between making the wall sticker and installation.
We print and cut on a Roland VP540i using Roland EcoSol Max inks. We then leave the inks to dry between 12 and 24 hours, weed, apply application transfer tape and then post out to our customers in postal tubes.
We are currently printing onto a Ritrama Jet 100 micron white monomeric digital print film as we market the Wall Stickers as removable.
I wondered if it could be temperature related?
Just very concerned that this has happened a couple of times for us within a short period of time.
Rachael.

Hi Rachael,

Are you using the correct profile for the Ritrama material ?

If not it could be that you are adding too much ink on the media and it isn't curing correctly.

When you leave the print to cure, is the print stood vertically in a roll or hanging ?

Could be one of or a combination of many things as previous posts suggest I expect!

As Kai said making sure the material and ink/profile etc. is used correctly is one big part - of which you have control, however from the paints and surfaces side you need to manage expectations and specify to customers that you cannot guarantee durability.
Paints are a tricky one, it is difficult to know for sure if it will work (due to chemicals etc) especially if the wall has been painted recently, and by recently that could be months rather than days/weeks as paints can take a long time to 100% cure.

I would have a disclaimer or offer test samples, or in addition to that a higher grade option with a different material and better adhesive?

Thank you for your feedback, it's most appreciated.

After printing and cutting, we stand the vinyl's on their ends to gas for 12 to 24 hours.

We do not have a dedicated profile for Ritrama installed - I will look into this now and give it ago.

I didn't know if the Ritrama removable vinyl was of low quality or not - maybe we should try a different brand / specification.
Can any of you recommend a good removable vinyl?

I have attached an image to show the profile that I am experiencing.

Don't like knocking manufacturers but ritarma material have never done it for me
List the problems
Monomeric materials shrink a lot with out printing on them
Lower tack removable adhesive
Printing dark colours = approx 250 -300 % ink. high loads of ink will as they dry weeken the adhesive and pull shrink the vinyl.
Cutting through the print or on the edge will only add to the problem.
Unknown surface and type of treatments or cleaning. Dust free smooth etc.

What can you do about it
At least use a polymeric vinyl further stabilizing of the vinyl could be laminating with a correct matching laminate.
Try to have a un printed boarder
Tell the customer straight that due to the range of surfaces found on walls the outcome can not be guaranteed in any way
Probably why I don't sell many

Here is a picture of another recent wall sticker that I had supplied for a trade show that curled up at the edges within a very short period of time.

Just concerned that I have supplied two orders recently that have experienced the same problem with edge curl.

I may need to give another media type ago.
