EGX-20 Table Issue

Post by antelopeslr5000 » Fri Oct 06, 2017 10:27 pm

Hi all,

I've just purchased a EGX-20 engraver and when I first apply power, the table moves downwards but doesn't stop, it seems as it wants to keep on moving downwards beyond its physical limit. After reaching this point, it stops driving after a few seconds and I have no control any of the X, Y and Z axis and the origin and view buttons do not work either.

I've used a EXG-20 before (I have access to one a work which I've used plenty of times) and never seen it do this.

Is this a common problem that can be fixed with a hard reset of some sort, or does it seem more terminal? I hope not because I've paid a fair bit of money for this and the guy I've purchased it from hasn't responded to any of my emails.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

The problem is probably a simple case of a bad limit switch and is a (relatively) cheap repair.

As the seller ignores you it's very likely that he was out for a deliberate scam and depending on the marketplace you may/should report it. And/or give a call to your local Roland office/service provider and be done with it.

Thanks for the reply.

I've had just checked the Y axis limit switch, 10.9k ohms when open and the switch closes (0 ohms) when the table passes over it so the Y axis limit switch seems fine. I'd like to give the seller the benefit of the doubt, but since they have failed to respond to any of my emails I'm thinking maybe it was defective when sold or since it wasn't packed very well (the top clear cover over the spindle was broken as well as one of the brass hex standoffs for the cover) it may have been damaged during shipping.

I shutter to think what Roland would change to service/repair the engraver! Might be a non-economical repair.

So I've had a bit more of a look and I think I may have found the problem.

The Y axis seems fine now, I removed the belt drive and manually moved the table down over the limit switch and the stepper motor now stops. However, the X axis has an issue. The spindle moves along the X axis for a short time and then stops/jambs. So I removed the X axis stepper motor to inspect. It seems to rotate freely, doesn't feel like it's the cause of the problem. Next, I inspected the X axis gear drive (the black gearbox the stepper motor is directly connected to) and noted that two consecutive teeth of the plastic gear drive/cog is broken. This is what is causing the jam along the X axis.

So I guess now I need to identify the part number of the gear drive so I can order a replacement part though Roland. Does anyone on the forum have access to an illustrated parts breakdown for the EGX-20 engraver or a least could point me in the right direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Figured so. It's not in the parts list, I hope Roland people (Kai?) chime in.

I pulled the gear drive apart today to have a better look.

The black cover has a part number (COVER, GEAR 22025615).

Can't find a part number for the actual gear though.

Are parts still readily available for the EGX-20?

The gear has two parts, with two part numbers -

21685141 (Upper) & 21685142 (Lower)
