Blotchy Ink on Avery MPI2050 Translucent

Post by Dirt Division » Wed Sep 16, 2020 1:09 am

I've recently upgraded the VG 640 to the TR2 inks and I can't seem to get a good print on Translucent media. Its coming out blotchy.
I've tried the Generic backlit profile, Uni and bi directional. Uni seems to make smaller blotches but more of them. Bi directional has fatter spaced out ones as in the photos.

The heat settings are 40/45 and tried 38/50.

I tried the actual MPI2050 profile but it doesn't fix the problem. Any ideas?

It looks like it is overinking, look for a more suitable profile with a lot less ink density, slow the head speed and ensure full width scan is on.

Ok...

The profile is the MPI2050 downloaded from the Roland website. I'm not sure where to look to find something more suitable for that material. Any suggestions would be helpful.

As for the over inking, it is an overprint of 2 for a back lit material so it needs to have high density.

Is this something that comes with the TR2 inks or is this just me having these teething problems with an unfamiliar product?

What happens if you print in a single pass, without the overprint?

It just looks profile based and the media not accepting that amount of ink in one go or at the speed that you have it set to. What is it like with the Generic 2?

All the generics are printing fine with one pass.

In context to this problem, I've only seen it once before I switched to TR2. It was because I printed standard instead of High Quality with generic back lit. High qual fixed it then, not this time though!

If you ensure full width scan is on and lower the head speed to 700, does it improve?
