nose cone

Post by jopatengraving » Sun Feb 15, 2015 1:10 am

Hi Guys

I'm using nose cone when engraving tags to ensure get consistent depth but finding it is marking (Like a ghosting) of what I engrave. So I engrave the name Jinxy and above the engraving very lightly but to the left will be those same name just marked lightly. Any ideas? Was thinking of putting something on the bottom of the nose cone to ensure not marking but not sure what?

Thanks
Mal

I think I worked it out, looks like had some metal on the bottom of the nose cone so cleaned it all up and looks ok so far.

Ok, take 2, still same issues engraving the metal with nose cone.

Engraving into zinc alloy (Spinning) and wasn't having any issues until today. Now it continues to ghost the engraving with a fine marking. Its like the nose cone picks up something and then as it goes around the letters or numbers it is marking the metal.

Any ideas how to resolve as we have orders to go out. Reason switched to nose cone in the last 3 weeks was due to inconsistent depths which fixed that issue but now its presented this new one.

Thanks
Mal

Have you replaced the nose cone? Sounds like it is just worn.

A little machine oil on the end of it can sometimes help also.

Hi Ryan,

Changed nose cone to one I know hasn't been used. Still same result. Must be the small metal parts sticking to it or something. If I put sticky tape on the tag, no ghosting but to do that and clean all the tags would add lots of time. Have also tried the oil but mixed results.

Any other thoughts or better solution to engraving the zinc alloy tags.

Thanks
Mal

Could be a coating on the material or dirt build up.
Have you tried any other type of tag for example something from metaza.com.

Hi Ryan, I'll try it across some other tags I have and see if that makes a different. I'll let you know

Thanks

Hi Mal,

If you are getting this issue, you could try using a little oil on the surface of the tag, this would lubricate the nose cone and allow it to move over the tag easier.
This is useful when the tag is rough, or when engraved created swarf.
Only a very small drop is needed, but remember to clean the nose cone and pin after every engraving so as to keep the nose cone and head working.

Hi Andrew, is there a plastic nose cone that will fit the egx 300 at all?

If you are engraving a flat item.. give it a whirl without the nose cone (details in the manual)

I had issues with ghosting even after a few goes with one on.. and I am using stainless steel keyrings/pendants direct from Metaza..

I gave it a go without the cone (don't attempt this for anything that isn't flat) and wow, the finish is completely different.. not a mark on the item and the finish is superb..
