Serial cable for MDX-15 - correct pin outs?

Post by WILL_UK » Mon Jul 07, 2014 1:12 pm

Hi. I have just acquired a used MDX-15, for which I will probably need to get a serial cable.

On other threads, it has been suggested a null modem cable will suffice, but looking on another Roland site it is indicated the following as the pin out. http://files.rolanddgn.com/Website/Imag ... iagram.jpg which is different to the wiring of a regular null modem cable. I know the only difference between null modem and crossover null mode is between pins 2 and 3 only, but the other pins on these null modem cables are different to the Roland diagram.

Question: Will a regular crossover null modem cable actually work or will I need to make up my own custom cable to the pin outs on the Roland diagram, bearing in mind most pre-made cables are moulded plugs and cannot be altered. I am looking at a 3mt cable length, so need to make sure I get the right item. I am ok with high quality soldering if needed, but pre-made leads are a far cheaper option. ;)

Any input would be welcome.

Will,

The Roland machines with Serial comm's use Hardware/Hardwire Handshake, software handshake Xon/Xoff does not work.

The cables I have used for years are wired like this.

Roland Serial Cable Connections

RS232
Cable 8 core screened
Length 1 to 3 meter max
DB connectors

PC >-----< Modela MDX15/20
Female >-< Male
DB9 >-< DB25
___________________
1 + 8 <-----> 20
2 <-----> 2
3 <-----> 3
4 <-----> 5 + 8 linked
5 <-----> 7
6 <-----> 4
7 <-----> 6
SRC <-----> 1

COMM Settings
Baud = 9600
Stop = 1
Data = 8
Parity = None
Handshake = Hardwire

Then the COMM settings are, 9600, 8,1,None, Hardware.

Note, most USB/Serial adaptors do not work, if you go down this route.

Hope this helps.

Hi Patrick. Thank you for your reply, it is much appreciated. :)

Have ordered the bits now to make up my own cable.

Thank you for additional information on screen connection and baud rates etc. You are a star.. !!

Hi Patrick, my dad has given me his MDX-20 [unused but without cable] and I'm trying to get it to work. I bought a serial 25>9 pin adapter but as you suggested it didn't work. Using the adapter, when I sent a print job to the device, I noticed the Modeling light started flashing, so some comms were working but nothing happened on the machine. Since then I've I've used your schematic and wired up a cable however the print job doesn't go through, just hangs, and the Modeling light doesn't flash.

I'm unsure what you mean by this... what is SRC?

If that means soldering the #1 wire of the 25 pin to the casing of the 9 pin... then that doesn't work.

I am also struggling to find these particular settings. Please advise!

I have found the other COM1 settings underneath Printers and changed those successfully.

Many thanks,
Ben

Ah, sorted it. A rogue bit of solder was the culprit! The machine is working now, very excited!

The dreaded solder short circuit !
Glad its sorted.

FYI SCR=Cable Screen. Some people prefer to connect the screen to Pin 1, although not important.
