generic vice vs mv-2

Post by mulhearnf » Sat May 19, 2018 1:36 pm

Hi, is it possible, practicable, safe etc, to fit a generic, machine vice, into a EGX-350 just to hold wood steady, instead of using double sided tape, or is it necessary to invest in the proper mv-2 vice?

If i don't already have a generic vice lying around the workshop, i can get one locally for a tenner, as opposed to mail ordering a mv-2 for 300+ quid.

If so, are there any things i need to know, before mucking about with bolts, is it just a case of removing the existing base plate, and bolting the new vice into the holes?

You can mount any vice that’s suitable height wise. Having removed the generic plate, naturally. There are plenty of threaded holes in the base frame to do that.

There’s one thing to consider with using low cost vices: they tend to misalign the piece when tightened due to sloppy mechanics.
